Former middle school girls' basketball coach charged with sexual assault

CONWAY — William S. Cavanaugh was arrested Thursday by Conway police on sexual assault charges that police say stemmed from his time as the Kennett Middle School girls' basketball coach.

Police said Cavanaugh, 24, is charged with three counts of sexually assaulting a 13-year-old girl.

"The investigation focused on Cavanaugh's conduct during the period of time he acted as the coach of the (girls') middle school basketball team," police said in a release.

Police said the investigation of the former coach began in early February after a complaint by middle school administrators.
