Men's Basketball: St. Anselm cruises past St. Mike's, leads NE-10

BJ Cardarelli notched a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds as Southern New Hampshire University outlasted Merrimack College for a 71-67 Northeast-10 men's basketball victory Saturday at the SNHU Fieldhouse in Manchester.

The Penmen, who are ranked No. 7 in the East Region, improve to 15-10 and 11-10 in the NE-10, while the Warriors now stand 11-15 and 8-13 in the league.

The win secures a berth in the 10-team Northeast-10 Men's Basketball Championship for the Penmen, their first since 2010. SNHU currently sits tied for sixth in the league standings with Adelphi University and would be the tourney's No. 7 seed currently.

Franklin Pierce 94, Massachusetts Lowell 85: At Lowell, Mass., the No. 23 nationally-ranked Ravens overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to improve to 19-6 overall and 16-5 in the NE-10. Eric Jean-Guillaume led the second half, 51-34 surge, with 32 points. Teammates Ellis Cooper, Ryen Vilmont and Adrianos Vourliotakis netted 18, 15 and 15 points respectively.

New Hampshire 68, Binghamton 56: At Durham, Patrick Konan netted 18 points and Scott Morris added 15 as the Wildcats notched their third America East victory of the season.

Trailing by eight at intermission, UNH outscored the Bearcats 42-22 over the final 20 minutes.

Brown 59, Dartmouth 50: At Providence, R.I., Tyler Melville led the Big Green, 2-7 in the Ivy, with 14 points. Gabas Maldunas scored eight points and pulled down nine rebounds.

Men's Ice Hockey

Franklin Pierce 5, Southern New Hampshire 3: Franklin Pierce jumped to a second period-four goal lead, in a Northeast-10 semifinal game Saturday. Zach Lubinski scored two goals to ignite the Penmen's third period rally. Ravens goalie Dave O'Brien made 35 saves to gain the victory.

Men's Skiing

EISA Championships: At Rumford and Newry, Maine, Dartmouth's Sam Tarling, Silas Talbot and Scott Lacy finished 2-3-4 in the Nordic 15K Free at Black Mountain. Tarling's time was 37:41.0. In the men's slalom at Sunday River, Hunter Black skied to fifth place with a combined time of 1:59.65. Vermont finished first and Dartmouth was second, 939.5-908.5.

Men's Volleyball

 

Daniel Webster: At Nashua, DWC topped Southern Vermont 3-0 but fell to top-ranked and defending national champion Springfield 3-0 in NECC play. Joe Walz had 16 kills and seven digs for the Eagles who won their sixth straight match prior to the loss. Women's Basketball
Franklin Pierce 101, Mass-Lowell 86: Brittany Martelle came off the bench to pour in 26 points and Franklin Pierce outpointed Massachusetts Lowell, 101-86, in a high scoring Northeast-10 Conference women’s basketball game in Lowell, Mass., Saturday.
Martelle played 29 minutes and shot 8-of-13 from the floor including 3-of-5 from beyond the three-point arc. She delivered on seven of her eight free throw attempts. It marked the fifth-consecutive game and the sixth time in the last seven contests she has dropped double-figures coming off the bench, including going over 20 points three times.
 Binghamton 55, New Hampshire 42: At Durham, the Bearcats scored the game’s final eight points to stave off a Wildcats rally that brought UNH to within five, 47-42, with 1:15 remaining in regulation.
 Merrimack 65, Southern New Hampshire 62: At Manchester, Deb LaValley’s layup pulled the Penmen to within two points, 64-62, with six seconds to play, but her subsequent steal and potential game-winning jump shot as the clock wound down failed to fall.
 St. Michael’s 63, St. Anselm 43: At Goffstown, the Purple Knights went on a 19-2 run to balloon a one-point advantage into a commanding 56-38 lead with 5:49 to play.
 Colby-Sawyer 65, Castleton State 59: At Castleton, Vt., the Chargers won their first North Atlantic Conference title and seventh conference championship as Taylor DeSanty scored a game-high 27 points.
 Women's Ice Hockey
 New Hampshire 2, Maine 2: At Durham, the Wildcats rallied from a two-goal deficit with second period strikes from Hannah Armstrong and Alexis Crossley. New Hampshire peppered the Black Bears goal with 51 shots, while UNH goalie Jenn Gilligan faced just 27. UNH is 13-15-4 on the year and to 9-8-3 in Hockey East.
 Dartmouth 7, St. Lawrence 2: At Hanover, Sasha Nanji and Karlee Odland scored two goals each as the Big Green closed its regular season with a 16-8-5 overall record.
 St. Anselm 6, St. Michael’s 1: At Bridgeport, Conn., No. 1 St. Anselm received goals from six different skaters in the ECAC Women’s OpenTournament first round.
 Norwich 6, Plymouth State 0: At Northfield, Vt., the Cadets outshot the Panthers 53-3 and held PSU without a shot for nearly two full periods in ECAC EAst quarterfinal action.

 Softball
 Stetson Hatter Classic: At Deland, Fla., Dartmouth split a doubleheader, beating Florida A&M 6-2 before losing to Bethune-Cookman, 9-6, in eight innings.
 Women's Lacrosse
 Dartmouth 8, Oregon 7 (2OT): At Eugene, Ore., Liz Calby scored with 1:03 remaining in double-overtime to lift the No. 12 Big Green to its season-opening victory.
 Massachusetts 18, New Hampshire 9: At Durham, Wildcats Laura McHoul, the reigning America East Rookie of the Week, finished with a team-high three goals and Jenny Simpson recorded two goals and an assist in the setback to the No. 14 Minutemen.
