New England College ranks high in U.S News & World Report survey

HENNIKER - Though grateful for the nod from the U.S. News & World Report's 2013 Best Online Graduate Education Program Rankings for 2013, President Michele Perkins said she's not surprised New England College has been ranked number 46 out of more than 600 colleges and universities for its online Master of Education program.

"We're well-known in New Hampshire, New England and beyond for our education programs," said Perkins. And taking those programs from the bricks-and-mortar classrooms and offering them online has been successful because the essence of New England College is not lost in translation, she said.

"Our online programs are highly personalized," she said. "We have a small student-teacher ratio and full-time faculty teaching the online programs which is not necessarily the norm."

The 37-credit Master of Education program offers concentrations in curriculum and instruction, literacy, special education, school climate lead­ership and school principal. The rankings by U.S. News & World Report measured various attributes of the program including faculty credentials and training, student services and technology, student engagement and admissions selectivity.

Mark Watman, interim vice president of academic affairs at New England College, said that making the transition from educating students in a traditional classroom to offering online options has occurred successfully by following a strategic plan of allowing relationships to be formed between teacher and students.

"Online classes have to be offered on a human scale," he said. "There are so many different flavors of online programs out there, but at New England College we're very devoted to maintaining the same quality and ethos we have here on campus."

Perkins said the personalization shows when students from the college's online programs attend graduation on campus.

"It's always a delight and a joy to see our online students come to campus for the first time and meet their faculty in person," she said. "We know our online programs are highly personalized when we see the relationships that have been formed."
