NH College Roundup: UNH women to open HE tourney vs. Friars

The University of New Hampshire women's ice hockey team earned the fourth seed in the Hockey East Tournament and will host fifth-seeded Providence on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Whittemore Center. UNH is 10-8-3 in Hockey East play while Providence is 8-10-3.

The teams met three times during the regular season. The results were a pair of ties and a 6-4 UNH win.

Kristina Lavoie leads the UNH women with 11 goals and 13 assists. Nicole Anderson is the top scorer for the Friars with 18 goals and 14 assists.

The winner of the contest will advance to the semifinal round, being held at the Hyannis Youth and Community Center in Barnstable, Mass.

Indoor Track

Dartmouth: Junior Abbey D'Agostino shattered the meet record in the women's mile during the Ivy League Indoor Heptagonal championship in Cambridge, Mass. She ran a 4:32.42 and beat the former mark by more than 11 seconds. The Big Green finished fifth behind Harvard, Cornell, Columbia and Princeton.

Franklin Pierce: The distance medley relay team of Makupa Rugabirwa (Concord), Mike Abrams, Colton Ham (Webster) and Antoine Gisore (Concord) ran a 10:16.91 at the Mason Last Chance Meet in Fairfax, Va., securing a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA Championship.

Baseball

SNHU 17, Chestnut Hill 1: The No. 22 Penmen moved to 5-0 and broke the game open with an eight-run eighth in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Brendan O'Brien went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI for SNHU.

Franklin Pierce 4, LIU Post 0: Nashua's Kevin McGowan threw a four-hit shutout with five strikeouts to pace the No. 9 Ravens (5-0) Sunday in Myrtle Beach. Derry's Zach Mathieu had an RBI double in a four-run seventh.

Men's hockey

St. Anselm 6, Stonehill 3 (Saturday): John Hyslip scored two goals to help the Hawks to a Northeast-10 Conference semifinal victory in Manchester. St. Anselm, 15-8-3 overall now, plays host to Franklin Pierce of Rindge for the champiopnship game on Saturday.
