NH College Roundup: PSU wrestlers ready for NCAAs

The Plymouth State University wrestling team will be competing this weekend at the NCAA Division III Northeast Regional Championships at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

The Panthers will join 17 other schools from the Northeast. The championships begin Saturday at 11 a.m. and continue Sunday at 10 a.m. before concluding with the championship rounds at 2:30 p.m.

PSU's top candidate to earn an NCAA spot is Femi Wheeler, the senior co-captain who has a 13-2 record at 157 pounds this season. He's ranked third in New England in the weight class.

Three other Panther wrestlers to watch are senior James Matlack, sophomore Travis Brooks and freshman Chris Perrault. Matlack has a 12-5 record this season at 165 pounds and owns a 38-27 career mark. Brooks is 7-4 at 174 pounds and was a place-winner at the Roger Williams Tournament. Perrault leads the team in victories with a 14-10 record and has a team-best seven pins.

The wrestlers will be competing for spots in the NCAA Division III National Championships on March 15-16 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The top three placers in each of the 10 weight classes this weekend will automatically advance to the NCAA national championships.

Men's lacrosse

Dartmouth 13, Vermont 8: In Hanover, a seven-goal surge in the fourth quarter by the Big Green (1-1) kept the Catamounts (0-3) winless. In the second half, the Big Green offense exploded for 11 goals. Jeff Perkins, Nikki Dysenchuk, Jack Connolly and Chris Costabile each scored two goals apiece.

Postponement

Keene State: The men's lacrosse game against Bates College today has been postponed and re-scheduled for March 27 at 4 p.m. at the Owl Athletic Complex.

Skiing

St. Anselm College: In Greenwood, Maine, the women's team (5:25.05) wrapped up the USCSA Regionals with a third-place finish in the giant slalom races and a fourth-place finish in the slalom races. The Hawks qualified for the USCSA Nationals in Sun Valley, Idaho for the second time in the program's history.

Honors

UNH: Kayla Gray has been named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League Gymnast of the Week. Gray set career highs on vault (9.725), floor exercise (9.875) and all-around (39.250). She matched her personal best uneven-bar score (9.800) and registered a team-leading mark on balance beam (9.850) to lead the Wildcats .

Plymouth State: Men's basketball player, freshman forward Uche Nwokeji, was selected to the Little East Conference 2012-13 All-Rookie team.

Franklin Pierce: Senior forward and co-captain Roscoe Sweeney of the men's ice hockey team has been named Northeast-10 Conference player of the week.

Keene State: The Owls placed three senior players on the All-Little East Conference men's basketball team. Ryan Martin was named to the first team while Eric Fazio and Rashad Wright were second-team selections. Wright was also named to the conference's All-Defensive team while freshman Tre'Tipton was picked to the All-Rookie squad. Martin joins Tyler Kathan as the only Owl to be named to the All-LEC first team three years in a row.

St. Anselm: Bryan Sullivan and Nick Dries of the men's ice hockey team each netted a Northeast-10 weekly award. Sullivan earned rookie of the week and Dries was selected as the goalkeeper of the week.

Daniel Webster: A pair of men's basketball student-athletes have been named All-conference by the New England Collegiate Conference. Daris Cosby earned second team honors, while John Hickson picked up honorable mention accolades.
