BOSTON - The Boston Bruins won their fifth straight game, edging Ottawa, 2-1, in overtime Thursday night to snap the Senators' five-game winning streak.
Patrice Bergeron deflected a Dennis Seidenberg flip shot at the net and barely through goalie Robin Lehner with 1:21 left in the OT to lift the Bruins to 13-2-2 on the season. The puck hit Lehner, playing his first NHL game of the season, and trickled toward the goal, barely crawling over the line. It was called no goal on the ice but was clearly in. The call was quickly overturned upon review.
Bergeron's fourth goal of the season made a winner of goalie Tuukka Rask, who moved to 11-1-2 on the season.
The win ended a two-game home losing streak for the Bruins, who hadn't won at home since Jan. 29.
The Bruins were returning from a 4-1 road trip.
Nathan Horton (No. 7) scored the other Boston goal, while Jim O'Brien (No. 5) scored a power play goal for the Senators, who have allowed just nine goals in their last six games, going 5-0-1 even after a crippling injury siege.
Lehner stopped 44 shots.
Milan Lucic was called for the new covering the puck with your glove rule with 31.6 seconds left in regulation. Overtime then began with the Senators playing 4-on-3, but they failed to take advantage. Rask made a big save on Peter Torris some 30 seconds before the Bruins won the first of five scheduled meetings between the teams.
The Senators tied the game with the first power play goal the Bruins allowed in their last 27 shorthanded chances. Rask stopped Kaspars Daugavins on a breakaway, but Daugavins stayed with it, got the puck behind the net and centered it. All four Bruins and Rask were in front of the net, but the puck was caught in Zdeno Chara's skates and David Krejci, in an apparent attempt to put the puck under his goalie, instead kept it alive and O'Brien scored.
The Bruins went 0-for-3 on the power play and are 0-for-26 for the season at home.
Lehner, who shut the Bruins out last Feb. 28 for his only NHL shutout (and one of his four wins), was playing, giving Ben Bishop a rest as the club tries to get by without Craig Anderson, out with an ankle sprain.
The first period was quiet for both teams, with the Bruins killing two penalties and the Senators one. There really wasn't a tough save through the first 20 minutes, but that changed in the second period.
Lehner got himself in trouble by clearing the puck up his own slot and right to Shawn Thornton, who got off a weak shot that went wide. Soon after, Lehner made a nifty pad save on Tyler Seguin, but Horton's weak shot got through legs and gave Boston the lead at 5:48 of the period.
Milan Lucic made the play happen when he kept the puck in right on the blueline.
