Monarchs continue dominance in St. John's with sixth victory

The Manchester Monarchs remain perfect in Newfoundland after a 4-1 win over the St. John's IceCaps Saturday night.

The Monarchs completed a weekend sweep and moved to 6-0 all-time at St. John's, including 4-0 this season. Manchester improved to 26-24-6 and are 4-0-1 in their last five games.

The Monarchs broke a 1-1 tie with three third period goals to claim the win.

Hunter Bishop's first goal as a Monarch gave Manchester a 2-1 lead at 9:35 of the third and proved the be the game-winner. Stefan Legein set Bishop up for the shorthanded tally.

Linden Vey made it 3-1 at 11:04, knocking home a rebound goal off the initial shot from Tyler Toffoli.

The Monarchs held on from there, earning goaltender Martin Jones the win in a game in which Manchester was outshot 38-22.

Defenseman Andrew Bodnarchuk scored a last minute empty net goal to put the game away.

St. John's had tied the game at 1-1 with a goal from Aaron Gagnon at 2:06 of the third period. The goal came just after Manchester missed a two-on-one opportunity on the other end by Toffoli and Vey.

Defenseman Bryan Rodney scored with just 3.1 seconds remaining in the second period to put Manchester on top 1-0.

Toffoli set up the Rodney goal and the veteran defenseman was aware of the dwindling time, snapping off a shot from the right circle to beat Eddie Pasquale top-shelf.

On Friday night, Andy Andreoff lifted Manchester with second- and third-period goals to even the score, and Manchester went on to a 5-4 shootout win over St. John's.

In the shootout, center Jordan Weal and left wing Colton Yellow Horn scored for the Monarchs. Monarchs goaltender Martin Jones denied center Eric O'Dell, center Ben Maxwell, left wing Jason Jaffrey and left wing Carl Klingberg.

The Los Angeles Kings announced Saturday that they have activated former Monarchs defenseman Alec Martinez from injured reserve and Andrew Campbell has been re-assigned to Manchester.

The Monarchs host Bridgeport Wednesday at 7 p.m.
