STRATHAM - An Exeter man will face a judge next month after getting into a scuffle with a police officer in the middle of Route 33 last weekend, police said.
Matthew Munsey, 24, was arrested March 3 following an incident that began when police found him on the ground behind Sweet Dreams Bakery on Portsmouth Avenue.
According to Police Chief John Scippa, police and fire crews were called to the bakery at 2:17 p.m. after receiving a report of an unresponsive man who was lying on the ground behind the business.
Stratham police Officer Grant Fotheringham arrived within minutes and confirmed that an adult male later identified as Munsey was unresponsive on the ground, Scippa said.
As Fotheringham was attempting to assist him, Scippa said Munsey regained consciousness and was incoherent and unable to answer questions.
Munsey then rose to his feet and suddenly bolted from behind the building out onto Portsmouth Avenue, Scippa said. The officer chased after him in an effort to prevent Munsey from running out into traffic on the busy road.
Fotheringham caught up to Munsey in the middle of Portsmouth Avenue and attempted to pull him back to the side of the road, Scippa said. Munsey then allegedly attempted to strike the officer. At that time, Stratham police Sgt. David Pierce, who was off duty and driving on Portsmouth Avenue, came upon the scene. Scippa said Pierce parked his vehicle in a manner to protect the scene and assisted Fotheringham with the arrest.
After his arrest on charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, Munsey was taken into custody and transported by Stratham ambulance to Exeter Hospital for evaluation. Scippa said the initial investigation indicates that drug use may have played a part in the incident.
Fotheringham suffered minor injuries during the arrest. He was evaluated by hospital personnel and is back to work.
After being evaluated by the hospital, Munsey was released to the custody of a family member.
He was released on $750 personal recognizance bail and is due in court on April 16.
