Middle-Aged Spread

It happens to the best of us - the so-called "Middle Aged Spread." In a whimsical solo exhibition slated to signal her retirement from pottery, Jane Kaufman focuses on the humor behind some not-so-sunny sides of getting older. Visitors to Exeter Fine Crafts, 61 Water St., in March are invited to check out "Bed Spread," a sculpture of a woman eating breakfast in bed, or "The Woman who is Going on a Diet Tomorrow." Also on view will be sculptures about "Peace on Earth," designer bags and how Granddad had fun in the hospital. Jane has also created two new finger puppets designed specifically for this show, "A Woman with a Spare Tire" and "A Man with Love Handles. What started out as a hobby has spanned the better part of 45 years. Initially a painter, Kaufman shifted to Styrofoam structures, then pottery. A member of the New Hampshire Potter's Guild, The League of NH Craftsmen and the New Hampshire Art Association, she has exhibited work at Exeter Fine Crafts since 1968. She has won numerous awards at juried art shows, has had many one-woman shows and was featured on "NH Chronicle" in 2008. After her retirement, she plans on moving to the Riverwoods Community in Exeter. A reception in honor of Kaufman's career is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, March 29.
