Firefighters battle two-alarm fire in Keene

KEENE ? Firefighters battled a two-alarm fire on West Street Sunday afternoon.

Fire Capt. Robert Leslie said his department was called to 12 and 22 West St. at 2:41 p.m. for a report of smoke coming from under a door.

After searching the building, firefighters found the basement of one of the buildings filled with smoke. Using a geothermal device, crews determined a small plume of flame was coming from a water heater.

A second alarm was struck to bring extra crews to help evacuate the two apartment buildings. The fire was extinguished, and residents were allowed back in the buildings after crews ventilated the buildings for two hours.

The street was blocked from Central Square to School Street. Crews from the Brattleboro Fire Department assisted the Keene fire crews.

No injuries were reported.
