NH College Roundup: Dartmouth wins, gains ECAC quarterfinals

Second-period goals from Brad Schierhorn, Tim O'Brien and Eric Robinson in a span of 4:58 lifted No. 5 seed Dartmouth College to a 6-3 win over No. 12 Harvard in the deciding game of their best-of-three first-round ECAC hockey series at Thompson Arena in Hanover Sunday.

Nick Bligh opened the third period with a goal, giving Dartmouth a 4-1 cushion. Dustin Walsh made it 5-2 at the 14:42 mark and Schierhorn completed the scoring for the Big Green with an empty net goal at 18:14.

The Big Green (15-12-5), who dropped the opener of the series then roared back to win two straight (including 4-1 on Saturday), advanced to the best-of-three quarterfinals beginning Friday against No. 4 seed Union in Schenectady, N.Y. Dartmouth went 1-0-1 against Union this season.

Women's basketball

Albany 71, UNH 57: In Albany, N.Y., the Wildcats ended their season at 12-18 after their semifinal loss in the America East Championship. Albany (26-3) extended its winning streak to 18 games. Kaylee Kilpatrick scored a team-high 17 points for UNH.

Kilpatrick made seven-of-12 field goal attempts and all three free throws. She had four rebounds, one assist, one steal and three blocks. Morgan Frame recorded 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals and a career-high six assists. Cari Reed finished with 14 points and four rebounds.

Frame and Reed were named to the All-Conference second team prior to the start of the tournament.

Women's hockey

Cornell 2, Harvard 1: In Ithaca, N.Y., Cornell goalie Lauren Slebodnick of Manchester, N.H., turned back 18 shots as the Big Red defeated Harvard Sunday for the team's third ECAC women's ice hockey championship in four years. Jessica Campell scored a power-play goal with 1:40 left for the game-winner.

In front of 2,500 fans, Slebodnick stopped 11 shots in the third period for Cornell (27-5-1), which clinched an automatic bid to next weekend's NCAA tournament quarterfinals.

Men's lacrosse

Daniel Webster 10, Green Mountain 5: In Nashua, Dan Knupfer and Anthony Cotoni each had four goals in the season-opening win at Rivier College. Bobby Loranger and Andrew Leon each added one goal. Charlie Petrick of Henniker paced Green Mountain (0-1) with three goals.

Baseball

Keene State 7, College of New Jersey 0: In Winter Haven, Fla., Chris Crutcher (2-0) of Londonderry tossed eight shutout innings. The righthander limited the Lions (1-4) to five hits and struck out five. KSC is 4-5.
