NH College Roundup: Vermont knocks UNH cagers out of playoffs

Senior Ferg Myrick scored a game-high 15 points in his final college game, but it was not enough for the seventh-seeded University of New Hampshire men's basketball team, which was defeated 61-42 by No. 2 Vermont in Saturday's America East quarterfinal matchup in Albany, N.Y.

The Wildcats season ends at at 9-20 overall. Vermont improved to 20-10 and advanced to the semifinals today.

New Hampshire jumped out to a quick 5-0 start on an opening 3-pointer from Myrick followed by a driving layup from Jordon Bronner. The Wildcats led 26-20 at halftime.

The Catamounts went on a 9-1 run to even the score at 31-31 early in the second half and would go on to score 15 unanswered points to pull away for good.

Men's lacrosse

Plymouth State 16, University of New England 5: At Biddeford, Maine, eight players scored for PSU Saturday in non-conference game. PSU (2-0) received four first-half goals from senior Mike Ventura and got a 16-save performance out of junior Jesse Kutz.

Darmouth 11, Robert Morris 9: At Hanover, Dartmouth overcame a multi-goal deficit for a home win Saturday. Senior quad-captain Chris Costabile led the Darmouth (2-2) attack with three goals.

Women's lacrosse

St. Anselm 19, Grand Valley State 9: At Manchester, sophomores Marissa Daly and Kaitlyn Stazinski combined for 11 points to lead the Hawks (2-1) Saturday. Daly registered five goals and an assist, while Stazinski scored four goals and set up another.

Florida 14, Dartmouth 9: At Hanover, it was an unfamiliar sight Saturday as the No. 13 Dartmouth women (4-1) lost at home for the first time since April of 2010.

The run of home perfection stretched across two regular seasons (8-0 and 7-0) and a win in the home opener this year against New Hampshire. No. 2 Florida is 9-0.

LIU Post 23, Southern New Hampshire 8: At Manchester, defending NCAA Division II national champion and top-ranked LIU Post (3-0) cruised past host SNHU (0-3) Saturday.

Skiing

NCAA Championships: At Middlebury, Vt., Dartmouth finished fifth and the University of New Hampshire ended up eighth on Saturday. Colorado won the team title with 708 points.

A quartet of Dartmouth skiers finished in the top 10 of the two Nordic races. Mary O'Connell had the highest finish for Dartmouth in fourth place of the women's 15K free, while senior Sam Tarling led the Big Green men in the 20K by taking seventh.

Senior Anya Caldwell Bean (Wolfeboro) capped her college career by earning All-America Second Team in the women's Nordic 15K freestyle mass start to lead UNH.
