MANCHESTER - A parent and civic leader has been nominated to fill the Board of School Committee seat vacated Tuesday by state Sen. Donna Soucy, and the aldermen are expected to vote on the candidate at their meeting Tuesday.
Ward 6 Alderman Garth Corriveau has nominated Daniel Bergeron, who is the vice chairman of the board of the Manchester Transit Authority and a ward selectman. By profession, he works in software support and sales, and he is a professor at Daniel Webster College. Bergeron has two children in the district, a daughter at McLaughlin Middle School and a son at Memorial High School, where he is also active in a parent volunteer group.
Corriveau has called on the aldermen to suspend the two-week layover period for new nominees and vote on Bergeron at its next meeting. He cited pressing matters before the school board, in particular the possibility that it will be asked to select a new superintendent by the end of the month.
"It's hard to imagine more important vote that the school board might be taking this year. I want our Ward 6 represented on that," he said.
As the Ward 6 alderman, Corriveau had the authority to nominate Soucy's replacement on the school board.
Bergeron said the public schools have long been a priority for him, and he noted that he's been involved in the school board's ongoing strategic planning process.
As for any longer-term plans to serve on the school board beyond Soucy's term and other questions about his views, Bergeron said before he had a chance to address the aldermen, he preferred to offer a statement.
"The entire community benefits from a well-run school district. I have much admiration for Donna Soucy and how she truly considered it a privilege to serve Ward 6 in this role," he said in the statement. "The conversation relative to improving the quality of education should be unending. It should evolve and have many voices."
Soucy announced her resignation at the school board's meeting on Monday, citing in part the demands of her new position as state senator. Soucy, a Democrat, had been on the board for seven years.
