College Sports Roundup: St. Anselm nine get win

Senior righty James Farrington threw a solid six innings to earn the win, and St. Anselm won its second straight game with a 9-3 triumph at St. Thomas Aquinas in Pomona, N.Y., on Saturday afternoon. Farrington gave up three runs while scatterinng six hits, all singles, and leadoff man Richie Manzi of Plymouth had a pair of hits and reached four times for St. Anselm (4-9-1).

Rob Kelly had three hits, including a two-out double in the fourth inning as the Hawks rallied for four runs. Manzii scored three runs, and Dan Lagasse of Londonderry had a pair of RBIs.

SNHU 13-3, Queens College 4-0: At Queens, N.Y., the 12th-ranked Penmen swept a non-conference doubleheader and improved to 12-3 on the season on Saturday. Jon Minucci homered and added a three-run double in the opener, while Andrew Pezzuto was 2-for-3 with three stolen bases. SNHU starter Tyler Gauthier went five innings, fanning six, to earn the victory in the opener. In the nightcap, Riley Palmer of Goffstown belted a two-run home run and Junior Mendez tossed a complete-game shutout, allowing just three hits and fanning nine with one walk.

Women's lacrosse

UNH 15, Longwood 10: At Farmville, Va., Laura Puccia and Nicole Grote scored four goals apiece, and goalie Kathleen O'Keefe recorded 10 saves for the Wildcats at the Longwood University Athletics Complex. New Hampshire coach Sarah Albrecht notched her first career victory as the Wildcats improved to 1-5.

Rivier 15, Mount Ida 8: At Nashua, midfielder Rebecca Wickens had four goals as unbeaten Rivier earned a Great Northeast Athletic Conference victory at Raider Field on Saturday. Lauren Brett scored three goals, and Vanessa Viola of Nashua was 9-for-15 inside the faceoff circle. Rivier improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in GNAC competition.

St. Anselm 10, Queens College 9: At Manchester, sophomore Marissa Daly scored five goals, including the game winner with 2:38 remaining in regulation, to lift the Hawks on Saturday afternoon at Grappone Stadium. Freshman goalkeeper Jane Bunn recorded eight saves to earn the first victory of her career. St. Anselm won its fourth straight to improve to 4-1.

SNHU 20, Southern Connecticut 13: At New Haven, Conn., Phoebe Clark of Concord tallied four goals and two assists as the Penmen picked up a win in the Northeast-10 Conference at Jess Dow Field. Lindsay Bucknam of Bow had three goals, and winning goalie Maria Ploof made eight saves. SNHU, which scored the game's first five goals, improved to 2-3 (1-0 NE-10).

Men's lacrosse

Mount Ida 11, Rivier 6: At Nashua, solid goaltending by freshman Clark Plummer kept the Raiders in the contest until Mount Ida took advantage of an extra-man opportunity. Junior Danny Hooper scored two goals for the host Raiders, and freshman Kyle Graham of Londonderry had a goal and gathered eight ground balls to lead the defense. Rivier dipped to 4-2 and 0-1 in GNAC play.

Men's volleyball

Rivier 3, Emerson 0: At Nashua, the Raiders extended their GNAC win streak to 24 games by sweeping visiting Emerson on Saturday afternoon. Freshman Kevin Baran-Maguire had eight kills to lead Rivier, who improved to 13-9 overall on the season and 6-0 in GNAC play. Junior Terence Matatall of Danville added seven kills and four digs.

Track and field

Franklin Pierce: At Staten Island, N.Y., freshman Mike Abrams finished first in the 200-meter dash and second in the 100-meter dash as the Ravens made their outdoor debut at Wagner College Stadium. Abrams, competing in a field of 33 runners, won the 200 at 22.74 seconds. Freshman Shawn DeCost of Nashua tied for fifth in the 100 meters, clocking a time of 11.80 seconds. The Ravens piled up five top-eight finishes in distance events, including a fifth-place finish by freshman Isaac Fithian (4:12.69) in the 1,500. In the 5,000-meter event, freshman Colton Ham of Webster placed second (15:22.72), followed by sophomore Makopa Rugabirwa of Concord in third (15:28.36).

In the women's field, freshman Alyssa Lambert of Manchester won the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:58.17, tops among 24 runners. Freshman Nadine Hyde had one of the most impressive individual performances for the Ravens as she posted a pair of top-three finishes in field events, shot put and discus.

Men's hockey

Union 5, Dartmouth 2: At Schenectady, N.Y., fifth-seeded Dartmouth fell behind early and lost game two of the ECAC Hockey Quarterfinals at Messa Rink, putting an end to the 2012-13 season for the Big Green (15-14-5). Eric Neiley scored a short-handed goal and Dustin Walsh added a late goal for Dartmouth, but league champion and fourth-seeded Union (19-12-5) completed the two-game sweep in the best-of-three series. Kevin Sullivan, Kyle Bodie and Shayne Gostisbehere all scored for Union before Neiley netted his eighth of the year, a career high for the sophomore who had seven goals as a rookie.
