Two alarm blaze levels two buildings at Middleton company

MIDDLETON — Two buildings and machinery worth about $250,000 were destroyed Tuesday morning in a two-alarm blaze at Middleton Building Supply.

Interim Fire Chief Jeff Roub said the cause of the blaze, reported just before 3:30 a.m., is not considered suspicious, but the state Fire Marshal’s Office was called to help in the investigation.

Roub said one of the outbuildings stored machinery while the other was used for sawdust. The two were joined at a corner, encompassing an area of about 20 by 60 feet.

When Roub arrived at the 5 Kings Highway property, he said fire already had swept through 80 percent of the building, which was used to store machinery, while 10 percent of the second building was burning.

The blaze quickly went to two alarms, bringing mutual aid from surrounding communities including Milton, Farmington, Rochester and Wakefield.

Fire crews had the blaze under control about an hour after it was reported.

Roub said there have been two fires at the lumber company in the past three years. Last year, there was a fire in one of the kilns, while three years ago firefighters extinguished a blaze in the sawdust building.
