Planners to learn about stores interested in Riverside Landing
Michael McGinley, who owns Riverside Landing LLC, was scheduled to meet with the planning board Thursday night. His proposal come without hindrance from a group of residents that failed to find enough support last week for warrant articles that could have stopped further development on the highway near the Baker River.
Town Planner Sharon Penney said McGinley has indicated to the town that more than one store, including a Market Basket supermarket, is interested in building on Tenney Mountain Highway in Riverside Landing, a 70-plus-acre lot near the river.
The town has been open to new businesses along the highway for decades, allowing Hannaford, Lowe's and other large business chains to open in an area the town designated for business development in its master plan, Penney said.
A group of residents campaigned against new development in the area, though, sponsoring three warrant articles at town elections last week, all of which failed.
One article that would have prohibited placing or removing earth from land within 500 feet of Baker River failed by a vote of 316-498. Two other related articles about zoning in the area, which would have curtailed development in what was described as the "environmentally sensitive zone" in the area of Riverside Landing, similarly failed by 316-498 and 313-502 votes.
"I'm very pleased Market Basket has shown interest in the site," McGinley said Wednesday. "Clearly, in my opinion, their operation as a major food retailer is second to none. Market Basket will surely be a most welcomed attraction to Plymouth and the surrounding towns."
