It's a family affair at Manchester road race

The third annual Shamrock Shuffle two-miler had a husband and wife theme to it Sunday.

Former St. Anselm College cross-country runner Kara (Molloy) Haas, her husband, Mike, along with Jen Mortimer of New London and Manchester's Christine and Philip Shaw were all in the spotlight in Manchester.

Kara Haas was the top women's finisher in 11:00.34 in the two-mile race in Manchester. Haas who lives in Chelmsford, Mass., with her husband, Mike, who placed 10th overall in the men's field with an 11:21.51.

The men's overall winner was Philip Shaw of Manchester in 9:39.40 and his wife, Christine, placed second overall in the women's field in 11:16.34.

Adding to the fun was Mortimer, who finished third in the women's field in 11:22.22. She is the wife of John Mortimer, owner of Millennium Running, the group that organized Sunday's race.

"Well, I've always said our series of races are family friendly and I guess it played out that way in this race," said John. "We had a pretty stiff southerly wind which inhibited any chance of a course record. But we did reach an all-time high of 3,176 entrants who came out in full force."

Jen Mortimer was an All-American at Boston College. She still holds the school's 5,000-meter record in 15:47. She was also in the Olympic Trials in 2004 in the 5,000 meters.

Haas was inducted in 1998 to the Anselm Athletic Club Hall of Fame for cross country. She is a two-time Millennium Mile race winner (2012 and 2001).

Griffin Gagnon of Hollis was runner-up to Shaw in the men's field at 9:42.99 and Scott McArthur of Denver was third in 9:54.69.

In Salisbury, Mass., Tim Perry of Nashua was the first New Hampshire runner to finish the Eastern States 20-Miler. He was fifth overall at 2:02.46 and trailing him were Granite Staters Dan Moriarty of Nashua (2:09.56, ninth overall) and Tim Horan of Dover (2:10:51, 10th overall).
