Keene State College renews status as OSHA training center

KEENE - On Wednesday, Keene State College's Occupational Safety and Health Administration Training Institute and the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration signed an agreement acknowledging and renewing the college's status as the sole regional training center in all six New England states.

In 2012 the institute trained more than 2,000 people and supported other OSHA industry trainers, who were responsible for training 36,000 work force members in the New England region, said Robert Baker, director of Continuing Education at Keene State College.

The initial agreement was signed in 1994.

OSHA personnel and state consultants are trained at Keene State, but most of the people who come to train are from the general public who work in industries in which they need the OSHA training or knowledge, Baker said.

The OSHA training for employers is to help reduce work place hazards and related human and financial costs. Training programs address hazards associated with working in general industry, construction, maritime, industrial hygiene, and health care.

The alliance between the Department of Labor and Keene State provides instructors and students with access to training resources, and it supports outreach efforts, and promotes safety and health training.

The Keene State Occupational Safety and Health Administration Training Institute is one of 43 education centers around the country working with OSHA.

The College's new Technology

Design and Safety Center that opened last fall offers more hands-on training opportunities for the OSHA training, Baker said.

"It's really enhanced our ability for more hands on training," Baker said.
