New president will start at River Valley in July

CLAREMONT - Maryland transplant Dr. Alicia B. Harvey-Smith is the new president of River Valley Community College.

Harvey-Smith, who is to start this July, has 25 years of experience in higher education. Her experience of bringing educational institutions and industries together will serve River Valley's mission well, said Paul Holloway, chairman of the Community College System of New Hampshire board of trustees.

"I thank the search committee for bringing us such a strong candidate," Holloway said in the announcement. "The communities served by River Valley are gaining a talented advocate for students and for the partnerships with industry that strengthen the regional economy. The board looks forward to working with Dr. Harvey-Smith."

In her previous position as vice president for student affairs at Baltimore City Community College in Baltimore, Md., she led initiatives in student recruitment, student retention and graduation strategies, workforce development and industry partnerships, the announcement said.

Harvey-Smith has also served as dean of learning and student development at The Community College of Baltimore County where she was responsible for budgeting, administration and evaluation of learning resources for academic and student services.

Harvey-Smith holds a doctorate in counseling and personnel services from the University of Maryland-College Park, a master of science in education from Johns Hopkins University and a bachelor of science from Morgan State University in Baltimore.

"Our committee was impressed with Dr. Harvey-Smith's passion for the community college mission, her commitment to students, and her background in implementing educational improvement strategies and ensuring a high-quality teaching and learning environment," Scott Kalicki, co-chair of the search committee and president of Lakes Region Community College, said in the announcement.

Harvey-Smith is replacing Harvey Hill, former owner and publisher of the Eagle Times, who stepped in as interim president in August.
