DERRY -- For the first time in more than three years, Brad Benson is no longer the chairman of the Derry Town Council.
At Tuesday night's reorganizational council meeting, Michael Fairbanks was elected the new chairman over Neil Wetherbee by a 4-3 vote.
"I want to thank the council for allowing me to lead over the last three years," said Benson. "As many of you know, I've had some health issues the last year as well as my dad's recent passing. Due to these issues and some work-related concerns, I will not be seeking a fourth year as the chair."
Benson said it has been a great deal of hard work but his pleasure to have served as the chair over the past three years.
"I wish the next chair good luck in this position," said Benson.
Councilor Phyllis Katsakiores nominated Neil Wetherbee to serve as the next chair, while one of the three new councilors, Mark Osborne, nominated second-year councilor Fairbanks.
The other two recently elected councilors, Tom Cardon and Al Dimmock, joined in the vote for Fairbanks, while Benson voted for Wetherbee.
"I'm sure I will falter, but I've got six that will help me when I do," said Fairbanks.
Dimmock was elected as the council chair pro-tem by a 6-1 vote, with Benson voting the lone no vote.
