Portsmouth Rotary Club to celebrate 90 years of service
On Saturday, the Portsmouth Rotary Club will celebrate 90 years of "service above self" during a gala celebration at the Jarvis Center, featuring a bit of history, a bit of dancing and a lot of "fun raising."
"We have planned this as a party to celebrate the accomplishment of the Portsmouth Rotary Club and its significant contributions to the community," current club president Nancy Notis said. "This is intended as a fun raiser versus a fund raiser."
The Portsmouth Rotary Club currently consists of about 200 members, both men and women, who are business and civic leaders from all walks of life.
The club has raised millions of dollars in its history for local efforts, including support for area non-profits, scholarships for high school students and a wide range of hands-on projects.
The club also assists in Rotary International's efforts to eradicate polio and to promote literacy, clean water, maternal and child health, and peace through conflict resolution.
Nearly 200 people are expected to attend Saturday's ticketed event.
A slide presentation will be shown during the cocktail hour and a brief program, including a historic presentation by club historian Bob Fields, and awards will take place before dinner is served.
The party will conclude with music by the Good Mem'ries Big Band.
