'Confrontation' with police leaves alleged robber dead

WALPOLE - An alleged armed robber was killed by police during a "confrontation" on Upper Walpole Road on Friday afternoon, according to a release from the New Hampshire Attorney General's Office.

The man's identity was withheld Friday night because his family hadn't yet been notified of his death, the release said.

The incident began when police received a report of a masked man committing an armed robbery in the town of Bellows Falls, Vt., the release said.

"Officers from the Walpole and Alstead Police Departments pursued the suspect and were able to stop his vehicle in Walpole on Upper Walpole Road. In the ensuing confrontation, shots were fired by police, and the suspect died at the scene," the release said.

The state police Major Crime Unit and troopers from Troop C are conducting the investigation, the release said.
