'Bow Wow Bedford' event includes rabies clinic, pet microchipping

BEDFORD - The Animal Rescue League of New Hampshire, T-Bones Great American Eatery and the town of Bedford are sponsoring "Bow Wow Bedford" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 13, at the animal shelter, 545 Route 101.

Daniel Webster Animal Hospital staff and veterinarians will be on hand for a walk-in rabies vaccine clinic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A vaccine is $10, and a one-year vaccine will be issued unless owners bring proof of a current rabies vaccine, which will allow for a three-year vaccine.

Microchipping will be available by appointment only from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $20 per dog, or $15 for Bedford, Goffstown and Mont Vernon dog owners. Town clerks from these towns will be there to register dogs, which is included in the $15 fee. For an appointment, call Maureen Prendergast at 471-0888.

The event also will offer food sold by T-Bones, pet-related vendors, face painting for children and a raffle.

All dogs should be on leads, and cats waiting for a vaccine should be in a crate for their safety. For more information, call Gwynneth MacKenzie at 472-5714 or go to www.rescueleague.org.

The shelter also has announced that it was selected to receive a $20,630 grant from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals for its fostering program.

The program placed more than 550 animals in 2012, and is on track to exceed that number in 2013, the shelter said.

Medical director Jenna Abreu says kittens and puppies with their nursing moms as well as post-operative cases are given priority for fostering, but ideally the shelter would like to place all of its transport animals in foster care for a seven-day quarantine period.

"The animals in foster care receive extensive handling, attention and affection in the home setting," Abreu said. "Because of this placement, these animals arrive back to the shelter more socialized and have improved success for adoption."
