NH College Notebook: Mabry, Jean-Guillaume earn All-America hoop honors

One led his team to a conference title, another took his to a regional championship. Combined, Roy Mabrey of St. Anselm and Eric Jean-Guillaume of Franklin Pierce University helped their teams win 47 games.

Such accomplishments rarely go unrecognized, so it's not surprising that both guards landed on the National Association of Basketball Coaches Division II All-America team.

Mabrey was the Northeast-10 Conference rookie of the year a season ago and was even better this year as a sophomore. He averaged 17.4 points and helped the Hawks go 23-6, win the NE-10 regular season title and reach the second round of the NCAA East Regional tournament.

Jean-Guillaume becomes a two-time All-America after averaging 16.3 points as the Ravens went 24-9, won the NCAA East Regional and reached the Elite Eight for the first time in program history before losing to Metro State. The senior was also named the NE-10 player of the year for the second straight season.

BIG GREEN ALERT: By this time next week, the Dartmouth baseball team will have played games in six states. So far, Big Green's barnstorming tour has been impressive.

Going into this weekend's games at Penn and at Columbia, the Big Green had won 12 of their first 13 games. They swept three games at the Minnesota Dairy Queen Classic, took eight of nine during a trip to Winter Haven, Fla., and came back to Hanover to batter Siena, 15-7, in their home opener on Wednesday.

Dartmouth has been doing it on offense and defense, batting a collective .321 going into the weekend, while its pitching staff had an impressive 2.87 earned run average.

Nick Lombardi was batting .386 with 18 RBIs in his first 11 games, while Nick Rupert (.395), Matt MacDowell (.366) and Ennis Coble (.348) all had gaudy batting averages. Cole Sulser (2-0, 1.00 ERA), Kyle Hunter (1-0, 1.50), Michael Johnson (3-0, 1.89) and Mitch Horacek (3-0, 2.57) were a combined 9-0 on the mound.

DRAFT TRACKER: Put Zach Mathieu of Derry high on the list of players from New Hampshire to look for when the MLB first-year player comes around in June.

Mathieu, the junior first baseman at Franklin Pierce University, is off to a hot start for the Ravens. He was recently named the NE-10 player of the week after going 10-for-24 with three home runs in six games. He was also 4-for-4 on stolen base attempts. Overall, Mathieu went into the weekend batting .341 with four homers and 14 RBIs.

THE HONOR ROLL: Sophomore attacker Lindsey Bucknam of Bow had 11 goals in three games for the SNHU women's lacrosse team, including five in a 13-11 win over Assumption... Kayla Green, a senior attacker at Stonehill, had nine goals and five assists to help the 10th-ranked Skyhawks go 3-0... Sophomore pitcher Valerie Bauer of Salem threw a complete-game victory and had a 1.14 earned run average in three appearances for the Merrimack College softball team... Andrew Sullivan of Rochester (Spaulding) is leading St. Joseph's of Maine in scoring after racking up four goals and an assist in a 5-4 win over Emmanuel College in men's lacrosse. The sophomore went into the weekend with 13 goals and three assists... Lasell sophomore Matti Doxter of Somersworth was named GNAC pitcher of the week after allowing three hits and going the distance in a 6-1 win over Southern Vermont. Rivier outfielder Jeremy Ball of Swanzey (Monadnock) was named the conference's rookie of the week... Nathan Taschereau of Goffstown picked up a pair of wins at No. 1 singles for the Colby-Sawyer men's tennis team to earn NAC player of the week honors... Mike Lavery of Penacook (Merrimack Valley) had three goals in two games to help the Norwich men's lacrosse team win a pair of games and even its record at 3-3.

MAKING COUSIN PROUD: Corinne Baita of Rochester (Spaulding). Jonathon Papelbon made his career finishing games, but his cousin prefers to go the distance. Baita, a sophomore pitcher for the Norwich University softball team, went into the weekend having completed five of the first six games she started. She walked one, struck out six and gave up two hits over seven innings as the Cadets opened their conference season with a sweep Johnson & Wales. Baita is a cousin of Papelbon, the former Boston Red Sox closer.

THE BEYOND THE BORDERS SPOTLIGHT SHINES ON: Amanda Flodstrom of Stratham (Exeter). Flodstrom, a junior attacker, was named the NAC player of the week in women's lacrosse after scoring nine goals - including her the 100th of her career - in a 1-1 week for Castleton State. Flodstrom scored six goals, including the tying tally late in the game, to help the Spartans rally past Roger Williams.
