Elmwood Gardens residents to resume weekly walks in Manchester

MANCHESTER - Elmwood Gardens residents tonight will resume their weekly walks around the 250-unit public housing project off Elm Street in an effort to build community among all residents and ensure their safety.

Only snow or rain will keep the small group of residents from gathering at 5 pm. in front of 85 Trahan St. for the hour-long walk.

"There is this perception, that because we are low income, that we don't care, or shouldn't care, about our community," said resident Andra Candow. "We are proud of our neighborhood. There are so many people from around the world here, and walking the neighborhood gives us the opportunity to reach out and get to know them. To be able to say that we are friends, neighbors. We are not just a bunch of people who happen to live on the same street or in the same building, we are a 'village.' Our community walks are just one of the many ways that our leadership group shows its dedication and commitment to the neighborhood that we all call home."

The purpose of the walks is to build relationships, increase safety and create community in a development home to diverse cultures, backgrounds and ethnicities.

The walks began two years ago as an offshoot of the Resident Leadership Training Program conducted by the Granite State Organizing Project.

Along the walks, the leaders will share informnation with residents about upcoming events, pass out a community calendar, invite residents to help in planning an after school homework club, field trips for children and more.
