Push for Title I director continues in Nashua
NASHUA - District Superintendent Mark Conrad said the job description for a Title I director will be finalized in time for next Monday's Board of Education meeting so the hiring process can begin as soon as possible.
The Board of Education tabled a vote on a new Title I director job description at a March 25 meeting after raising concerns that the position might be too much for one person to handle.
"(The board knows) we have to fill the position regardless of how the job description turns out," Conrad said.
Conrad said the new position is an evolution of the current Title I coordinator, a position that pays more $60,000 a year. Patricia Burns, the current coordinator, is retiring at the end of the year.
Conrad said a director will have more authority to coordinate among the five Title 1 elementary schools in the district, and the salary will be higher than the coordinator position. The budget cost will be roughly neutral, however, because the role - and pay - of the assistant coordinator will be reduced, Conrad said.
The new position would have the authority of a principal, Conrad previously told the board, and would be responsible for examining practices and funding at the district's five Title I schools to ensure money is being spent in ways that make the maximum impact on students.
Conrad also told the board that the evolution of the position is needed because performance in the district's Title I schools has not improved as expected.
Title I designations, which make schools eligible for federal assistance, are reserved for schools where 40 percent of the student population qualifies for free or reduced lunches. Fairgrounds, Ledge Street, Dr. Crisp, Mount Pleasant and Amherst Elementary qualify as Title I schools.
If the board approves the new job description at next Monday's meeting, Conrad said, the district would begin the process of filling the position immediately.
