More Manchester cabs are back on the road

MANCHESTER - Almost half of the city's fleet of 18 taxis were back on the road Thursday after an annual inspection sent many of the vehicles back to the garage for repairs.

Kevin Kincaid, director of licensing enforcement for the Manchester City Clerk, said eight taxis were in service by Thursday afternoon after clearing a police inspection conducted earlier in the week.

"Hopefully tomorrow afternoon we should have three-fourths of the fleet," Kincaid said.

There were only four cabs in service on Wednesday, a day after a number of taxis failed inspection and the owners of the city's two cab companies surrendered the other medallions voluntarily, Kincaid said.

Minor repairs like cracked windshields or headlights were easily repaired, while other vehicles needed more extensive work before inspectors would give the green light.
