Veteran decorator sets up shop in Amherst

Lincoln, who has recently purchased her own home in the historic Amherst Village and is currently renovating the space, has been decorating for 35 years. Her parents and grandparents were all entrepreneurs who shared with her a knack for business, and her sense of style carried her through a fascinating career. She worked as a buyer for the Filene's department stores, and when her kids were born, moved into the world of home decorating.
After a break from decorating to work in the schools while her kids were in their teens, Lincoln woke up to a quickly emptying nest and realized it was time to get back to what she loved. Her home renovation project sent her into the stores and design centers, but she couldn't find everything she wanted in one place, so she decided to open My Feathered Nest.
"Hopefully people are looking for what I have," she said.
The shop reflects Lincoln's taste, which tends to be eclectic with room for both whimsy and formality.
"I don't [have] rules," she said. "I can tell what goes together and what doesn't, but there aren't any hard and fast rules."
She believes furniture should last and retain its appeal long after a current fad has passed. In that vein, she also incorporates a mix of antiques - pieces that have proven their staying power.
But to give a home a burst of personality, Lincoln shoots for the whimsical. Lamp shades made out of leaves, rich wool rugs in vivid patterns, fanciful clocks, contemporary chandeliers, even an occasional bird's next add a bit of uniqueness.
Lincoln also provides a wide array of gift items, from scented wax bowls and candles, to knickknacks and stuffed animals. And she offers design and decorating services, which are quickly becoming a growing segment of her business.
"The shop gives people an idea of what I'm capable of," said Lincoln.
