Residents in four apartments displaced by Rochester fire

ROCHESTER - A two-alarm fire destroyed a second-floor apartment and slightly damaged others in a two-story home on King Street Wednesday afternoon.

Police, firefighters and emergency personnel responded at 12:04 p.m. to 6 King St. and immediately sounded a first alarm, according to Fire Capt. Paul LaClair.

"When we turned the corner around the (downtown) fire station, we could see smoke," LaClair said, adding crews from the first engine saw fire coming out of three second-floor windows when they arrived at the scene at 12:06 p.m.

"The first crews were able to knock down the fire pretty quickly," LaClair said.

LaClair said the second alarm brought all Rochester firefighters and their counterparts from Barrington, Durham, Milton and Somersworth to the scene. He said firefighters from Dover, Farmington and Berwick, Maine, provided station coverage.

Although paramedics from Frisbie Memorial Hospital were at the scene, LaClair said the fire did not cause any injuries.

LaClair said the fire was under control at 1:17 p.m., which is when mutual aid companies were released.

He said the fire destroyed one apartment on the second floor, while the other three apartments sustained minor smoke or water damage. He added residents should be able to return to some of apartments once they are cleaned up.

Members of the American Red Cross responded to the scene to assist residents.

Firefighters have not determined what caused the fire or whether it was suspicious, but LaClair said the investigation is under way.
