Bishop Guertin boys' lacrosse team wins opener

NASHUA - Senior Blake Boudreau won 17 of 20 faceoffs while sophomore Mike Caluccio and junior Tom Hurley scored two goals apiece, leading Bishop Guertin of Nashua to a 11-6 victory over Exeter in a rainy season-opening match-up of Division I boys' lacrosse title contenders at Stellos Stadium Wednesday night.

Bishop Guertin, with six starters returning to a lineup that last season won its last 11 games against New Hampshire opponents and captured the Cardinals' third straight division title, picked up right where it left off.

Bishop Guertin went into halftime with a 5-4 lead, but Exeter started the second half with two quick goals to go up 6-5.

The lead was short-lived as Exeter failed to score again while Bishop Guertin scored six straight goals.

Bishop Guertin head coach Chris Cameron said he was happy with the victory, but unhappy that his team only played well in spurts.

"We didn't play consistent and Exeter is always a top-four team. We need to play all 48 minutes, not just in bursts," Cameron said.

Cameron explained that he thought his team made excellent progress, always playing with effort in the preseason, but that the opening game only serves to prove that, "we have a lot of things that we still have to work on."

The key to the victory, Cameron said, was the play of Boudreau.

"He won almost every faceoff. He was outstanding. He gave us a huge advantage the entire game."

Along with Caluccio and Hurley, Cameron said that Connor Donahue, who scored one goal and had two assists, also had an excellent game on the offensive side.

"We can still get much better, much more consistent," Cameron said.

Bishop Guertin returns to action Friday at Lincoln-Sudbury Regional in Sudbury, Mass., while Exeter's next game is at home Saturday against Bedford.
