UPDATED: UNH hoop coach Herrion signs contract extension

HERRION

University of New Hampshire men's basketball coach Bill Herrion gets a couple more years in his bid to turn the program around.

Director of athletics Marty Scarano announced on Wednesday that Herrion's contract, which had one more year to run, has been extended for two years to April 30, 2016. Herrion's base salary of $152,340 remains unchanged, school officials said.

The first order of business will be to rebound from a season that matched Herrion's worst record in his eight years at the school.

"I think we do things the right way," Herrion said. "But I'll be the first person to tell you, it doesn't have to come from anybody else, that we'd obviously love to have more wins. That
is the goal. That is the motivator. I just think that is the missing piece right now."

The Wildcats were 9-20 overall and 5-11 in America East in 2012-13. They have reached double figures in wins in six of Herrion's eight seasons. UNH was also 9-20 in 2007-08 and is 92-144 under Herrion overall

"This past year did not go the way we anticipated, but we think we have a good nucleus coming back and so far we have a good recruiting class coming in," Herrion said.

The Wildcats beat Div. III Suffolk, 91-51, in their opener last season and Dartmouth, 72-58, but then lost their next four games and struggled most of the season.

They lost a 61-59 overtime heartbreaker at Boston College on Dec. 16 to start a nine-game losing streak that included defeats in their first six America East games.

One of the highlights of the season was a 92-86 overtime win at home against UMBC on Feb, 16 that made Herrion the league's all-time winner in conference games. He has 155 career league wins.

Herrion spent eight years at Drexel to start his head coaching career and followed with six years at East Carolina before coming to Durham.
