Derry school district's search for Hood assistant principal reopened

DERRY - Earlier this year, the school district began the search process for two new assistant principals for its middle schools, as administrators from those schools moved to take the reins of the new NEXT charter high school.

According to Superintendent Laura Nelson, the search could be coming to an end at one of the schools while it looks likely to continue at the second.

"At the Gilbert H. Hood Middle School, we are going to reopen the search," said Nelson. "We did round one, but we did not find the ideal candidate for the position."

Currently at Gilbert H. Hood, seventh-grade teacher Ross McLean has been serving as a full-time interim principal. That move allowed former assistant principal Joe Crawford to transition full time to the charter school.

Nelson said she is interviewing the top candidate for the West Running Brook Middle School principal position on Friday.

"Five weeks into the search, that position could be filled," she said.

The new assistant principal would replace Justin Krieger at West Running Brook.

The operation of the charter high school is expected to be cost neutral to the school district. The district will take the cost for students attending Pinkerton Academy and subtract what it gets in state aid. The difference between the two figures will pay for the students who go to the charter school.

The charter school will be located at the Gilbert H. Hood Middle School, and the school will be renting the space from the district for a nominal annual fee of $1.

The school district will act as the financial agent for the charter school, and the charter school will also be reimbursing the school district for janitorial and nursing services.

With state approval, the district also received startup funding for the school. The charter school is expected to enroll 30 students in its first year.

In addition to the assistant principal positions, Nelson said there are several other open positions that are posted on the district's website.

"People can look on the website under the employment section," said Nelson. "There is an online application process, and we ask that people do apply online."
