Landry Center receives national reaccreditation

NASHUA - For the fifth time in its history, Rivier University's Landry Early Childhood Center has been awarded national reaccreditation through the National Association for the Education of Young Children.<br /><br />In order to achieve NAEYC accreditation, the Landry Center was measured against national standards of quality that university officials said go beyond state health-and-safety licensing requirements.<br /><br />"This is what parents look for and how they can begin to identify a quality program, because licensing really is the minimum standard, where accreditation is that national recognition," said Nancy Pynchon, director of Rivier's Landry Early Childhood Center.<br /><br />The accreditation criteria addressed every aspect of Landry's early childhood education program, including the education and qualifications of its teachers, child-to-teacher ratios, programs, curriculum and the health and safety of the children.<br /><br />Pynchon said that it was important that the center went through reaccreditation because it will help subsidize the cost of childcare for the families of active service members.<br /><br />The Landry Center doubles as a teaching tool for university students, because it allows university education students to receive hands-on experience and instruction by interacting with and observing the center's children, while working with experienced child-care professionals.<br /><br />Diane Monico, director of practicum experiences and certification officer at Rivier, said that in order for students to receive their child-care licensing, they must demonstrate that they have experience working with children of different needs, different ages and skill levels in different types of situations, something the center provides.<br /><br />She added that having the students receive real world experience working with children under the supervision of professionals is not only important as a teaching tool, but also to give students the confidence they need in their careers.<br /><br />"Reaccreditation is a very intensive process that involves the entire staff working together toward a goal of validation," said Pynchon. "Becoming reaccredited reaffirms our belief that our children and families are being provided child-care services that are recognized nationally as high quality. We are all very proud of that designation and are happy to offer this service to the Rivier University community."
