College Sports Roundup: Keene State's Howe earns 500th coaching victory

The Keene State College Owls made sure baseball coach Ken Howe got his 500th win on Thursday.

Keene State pounded out 13 hits en route to a 15-5 non-conference victory over Fitchburg State, giving Howe the magic milestone. Howe, in his 27th season, is 500-470-9, joining a group of 34 active Division III baseball coaches who have won 500 or more career games.

"It means I'm old. I've been here a while" said Howe, when asked to reflect. "There are a lot of losses that go with those 500 wins, but it's a dream of mine to be doing this. I'm very luck to be a Keene kid and have the opportunity to do this in my hometown."

A freshman member of the team, son Dustin Howe, got into the game and was abile to be a part of his father's big day.

The Owls, 14-16, received big hits from Ian Seawards and Brett Dootson. Seawards, of Dover, doubled and scored in the first inning, then added a two-run double in the fifth. Dootson doubled and scored in the first inning, then added a three-run double in the second.
