UNH's Peters headed to Philadelphia Eagles' training camp, too

University of New Hampshire defensive back Dontra Peters wasn't drafted last weekend, but his goal of playing in the National Football League is still within reach.

Peters said he has accepted an invitation to attend the Philadelphia Eagles' rookie camp next month. Peters also received invitations from the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Jets, and said he was leaning toward a tryout with Seattle until he received a phone call from UNH coach Sean McDonnell on Saturday night.

"Coach Mac told me he had just talked to (Eagles coach) Chip Kelly, and the Eagles were interested too," Peters said. "Then I got a call from Chip Kelly. He told me, "If you can play in Coach Mac's system, you can play for me.'

"After talking with my parents and Coach Mac, I figured the Eagles would be the best fit. I feel like I have a better chance to make my presence felt with the Eagles."

UNH linebacker Matt Evans is also scheduled to attend the Eagles' rookie camp. Evans is UNH's all-time leading tackler.

Kelly, a former Manchester Central quarterback and former assistant coach at UNH, is in his first season as Philadelphia's head coach.

After redshirting in 2009, Peters played on the offensive side of the ball during his next three seasons with UNH. He was moved to defensive back before his senior season, and said that's the position he'll be playing during rookie camp.

Peters was named to the Colonial Athletic Association's Second Team after his senior season, when he tied for third among CAA players with four interceptions. He also led the Wildcats in kick-return average (26.8 yards).

He rushed for a team-high 595 yards and scored seven touchdowns on 117 carries as a junior. "I have nothing handed to me," Peters said. "I still have to compete.

"If I do my best, I can live with that. I have to make the most of this opportunity and that's what I'm going to do."

According to UNH spokesman Mike Murphy, former UNH punter/tight end Kyle Auffray will attend the Arizona Cardinals' rookie camp. Auffray played at UNH in 2009 and 2010 after transferring from Mississippi State, where he played quarterback.
