UPDATED: Fire damages building in Farmington Wednesday; pets saved

FARMINGTON – Local and state investigators are looking into a fire that displaced four families on Winter Street Wednesday afternoon.

Police, firefighters and emergency personnel responded at 3:47 p.m. when the fire was reported at the two-story building at 19 Winter St.

Fire Chief Richard Fowler said there were no injuries and firefighters were able to rescue some pets. He said firefighters believe all of the people and animals were able to escape or be removed.

"We did save a cat," Fowler said. "They pulled out a turtle (from the home)."?

Local crews were assisted by firefighters from Alton, Milton, New Durham and Rochester. Alton and Gilmanton provided station coverage.

After searching the home, firefighters believe the building was clear of people.

Firefighters vented the top of the building and removed insulation to ensure the fire was out.

By 5:30 p.m. only Farmington and New Durham firefighters remained at the scene and part of Winter Street was blocked by police.

Fowler said one apartment was destroyed and three others sustained serious heat, smoke and water damage. He added no one was injured as a result of the fire.

Members of the American Red Cross and Victims Inc. are assisting displaced residents.

Fowler said it's still too soon to tell whether the fire is suspicious or not.
