Solo homers do the trick for Fisher Cats

Ryan Schimpf, Adam Loewen and Clint Robinson each blasted solo home runs to lead Ryan Tepera and the New Hampshire Fisher Cats to a 5-2 Eastern League baseball win over the Reading Fightin Phils Sunday before 5,990 fans at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium.

Tepera (4-1) tossed six shutout innings for the victory, delivering the Fisher Cats to their first series sweep of the season.

New Hampshire (15-16) outscored Reading (12-16) in the three-game series, 27-10.

New Hampshire remains home to host a three-game series against New Britain. The series begins today at 6:35 p.m. Lefthander Logan Darnell (3-1, 2.16) of New Britain takes the hill against New Hampshire righthander Marcus Walden (1-3, 2.97).

All three homers Sunday came with two outs in the inning against losing pitcher Seth Rosin (1-3, 3.24 ERA). He allowed seven hits, four runs (three earned) and fanned five with no walks.

Schimpf blasted his homer in the first inning, followed by Loewen in the second inning and Robinson in the sixth inning. Robinson also drove in a run in the eighth inning with a double. He is hitting .337 and will carry a nine-game hit streak into today's series against the Rock Cats.

Tepera allowed three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Joel Carreno pitched two scoreless innings and Chad Beck, who allowed two ninth-inning runs, finished the game.

Tepera moved into a tie for the league lead with his fourth victory of the season, lowering his ERA to 2.78.

Carreno now has an 0.59 ERA. In 15-1/3-innings, he has allowed one earned run. He has issued two walks and has 26 strikeouts in 13 game appearances.
