Manchester woman arrested in theft of elderly woman's purse
MANCHESTER - A 28-year-old woman is under arrest in the theft of an elderly woman's purse taken from a shopping cart last month at a local grocery store.
Jeannie Mailhot of 159 Pine St. was arrested Sunday afternoon at Bridge and Pine streets.
Police said the theft happened about 8 p.m. on April 21. An 84-year-old woman was shopping at Stop & Shop at the Lincoln Street Shopping Plaza when she realized her purse was missing from the cart.
Investigators viewed the store's surveillance video which recorded a woman, who had a 4- or 5-year-old child with her, take the purse from the cart, tuck it up under her shirt and then leave the store.
Police released the video of the woman and after it was aired, received tips from viewers as to the woman's identity and confirmed it with Mailhot's relatives, according to Lt. Maureen Tessier.
Investigators obtained a warrant for Mailhot's arrest on a felony theft charge because of jewelry and the amount of money in the purse.
Tessier said when Mailhot was arrested, she had marijuana and cocaine on her. As a result, she also was charged with possession of a narcotic drug, a felony, and possession of a controlled drug, a misdemeanor.
