Daniel Webster nine loses NCAA test

Daniel Webster College ran into a hot pitcher from New Hampshire Wednesday.

Logan Carman of Newfields fired a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts to lead top-seeded Southern Maine to a 5-0 victory in the opening round of the NCAA New England Regional Division III Baseball Tournament in Harwich, Mass.

The Huskies (38-7) will play fourth-seeded Western New England in the winners’ bracket game Thursday while the Eagles (28-11) remain alive in the double-elimination tourney to face MIT today at 9:30 a.m.

Carmen had a no-hitter through the first four innings. Southern Maine scored its first run off senior starter Greg Dubela of Stratham on a two-out RBI single from Chris Bernard, who finised with two RBIs.

In the bottom of the eighth, senior Tucker White of Deerfield crushed his Little East Conference best 10th homer of the season, a two-run shot.

Carman (11-0) completed his first season by retiring 11 of his last 13 batters. He walked two and hit two batters.

Dubela (8-1) went the distance, allowing eight hits and no walks.
