Police say house guest helped himself to credit card

MANCHESTER— While investigating the theft of a car later found on its roof on Lake Shore Road, police were told by a resident of South Lincoln Street that he recently noticed suspicious charges on his credit card.

The stolen car investigation soon turned into a credit-card fraud investigation, and police arrested a homeless house guest when the car owner identified charges for a nightclub, Wendy’s and McDonald’s that weren’t his.

Manchester Police Officer John Cunnigham went to the home Saturday about 10 a.m. to take a report of a stolen car, a 2005 Kia Spectra, which was taken out of the attached, locked garage. Police said there were no signs of forced entry. The car was actually found several hours earlier, around 4 a.m., on its roof and unoccupied, on Lake Shore Road. It appears that the vehicle was traveling too fast on Lake Shore Road to negotiate a curve and ended up rolling over, according to police.

Cunningham determined that a 21-year-old house guest, Ian Maldonado, with no fixed address, who had been staying at the home the past two weeks because he had no place to live, used the credit card.

Maldonado was arrested and charged with four counts of fraudulent use of a credit card and violation of bail conditions. Police continue to investigate the stolen vehicle and related crash.
