Police say women were smoking crack with 2-year-old in car

MANCHESTER — Two Vermont women were arrested Sunday evening about 7:20 p.m. after undercover police were watching their car parked beside the Mobil Gas Station, 1602 Elm St., and found them with a syringe containing suspected cocaine, 21 Clonazepam pills, and a metal container with suspected crack cocaine, according to a police report.

Also in the car was one woman’s 2-year-old son.

Arrested were Sarah Lucas, 32, the driver, and Ellen Smith, 31, the passenger and mother of the child, both of Barre, Vt.

Police said they were following the car because the occupants appeared to be engaged in some kind of suspicious activity near Spruce Street and Barry Avenue, and again in the area of Merrimack and Union streets.

Police said Lucas was holding a glass pipe in her hand, and they said they determined that both women had been smoking the crack cocaine inside the vehicle.

Lucas was arrested and charged with three felony counts of possession of a controlled drug. Smith was charged with one felony count of possession of a controlled drug and endangering the welfare of a minor. She was also held on a warrant for resisting arrest out of Concord. Her son was eventually released to the custody of a family member.
