No arrests in Manchester homicide; single shot to chest killed man

MANCHESTER — No arrest was made Tuesday in the drive-by shooting of a Manchester man.

Mark Donnelly, 31, was killed about 11 p.m. Saturday while walking in the area of Pine and Prospect streets, according to police.

Jeffery Strelzin, senior assistant attorney general, said nothing in the investigation has determined that the public is in danger.

"However, a homicide has occurred and no arrest has been made," he said. "So people need to take that into account when making decisions about their safety."

According to witness accounts, Donnelly was shot by a man who approached him in a car after Donnelly and his friends had made fun of a woman panhandling. The woman said she would return with her boyfriend and Donnelly said he would fight him, witnesses said. Minutes later, a man in a car drove up and showed a gun. After Donnelly said he would fight the man "one on one," several gunshots were fired, witnesses have said.

Strelzin said authorities have not yet corroborated witness accounts. He said Donnelly died of a single gunshot wound to the chest.

"I can tell you that the investigation is ongoing, which includes how many shots were fired and the type of weapon used," he said. He said the investigation also includes "whether the victim and the assailant knew each other."

Strelzin said he couldn't comment on whether authorities had any suspects.

Donnelly, the father of two girls, was described by friends and loved ones as a graffiti artist who could paint murals and was sought after by parents who wanted to have their kids' names drawn in graffiti.
