NHIAA Roundup: Bedford rolls in NHIAA tennis tournament opener

Bedford won the last three Division II state boys’ tennis titles. Now it’s off to a good start in the quest for a Division I championship this season.

McKinley Grimes set the tone Tuesday with an 8-0 win against Brian Xiao at No. 1 singles and led the Bulldogs to a 9-0 victory against Bishop Guertin of Nashua in a quarterfinal round match in Bedford.

Jim Delahunty, Dan Soucy, Zach Anderson, Matt Weeks and Ian Horne each won their singles’ match as Bedford remains unbeaten at 15-0. Bishop Guertin ends its season at 8-7.

Concord 5, Pinkerton 1: In Concord, Greg Cistulli, one of the top players in the state, defeated Felix Benz 8-0 in the No. 1 singles. Justin Toler, Evan Hewey, Thomas Bengtson and Mattias Lambert each won their singles’ match for Concord (14-1). Mike Thomas was the lone winner for Pinkerton (8-7). The match was over after singles’ play and both teams mutually agreed not to play doubles.

Londonderry 5, Keene 3: In Keene, the Lancers won five of the six singles matches to claim a win over the Blackbirds in the first round of the Div. I playoffs on Tuesday. Harrison Max, Ryan Broderick, Tim Court, Matt McKinney and Mike Paquette all won at 1-5 singles for Londonderry (12-3). Keene finished the season at 12-3.

Softball

Trinity 13, Hanover 1: In Manchester, Allie Bowe scored three runs and reached base five times for the 8-7 Pioneers. Seniors Bryanna Pearson, Abbie Proulx, Katie Pelton and winning pitcher Nicole Stephen all contributed to the win. Stephen fanned eight over 6 innings.

Portsmouth 6, Windham 4 (9 innings): In Windham, the Clippers (8-7) scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to pull off a win over the Jaguars (10-5) in Div. II action on Tuesday. The teams combined for 18 hits and 13 errors. Christina Steere, Heather Tornquist and Olivia Estes all had two hits for Windham.

Baseball

Hanover 5, Souhegan 2: In Hanover, Cyrus Rothwell-Ferraris laced a two-run single in the fifth inning and Hanover (10-5) added two runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Harry Dwinell and a sacrifice fly from Evan Greedwald.

Girls’ lacrosse

Souhegan 17, Salem 4: In Amherst, Madison Learned scored six goals to pace the Sabers (14-1) to a Div. I win over the Blue Devils (4-8) on Tuesday. Jamie Wallisch and Mickenzie Larivee had three goals and one assist each for the winners while Kara Thomas made 10 saves for Salem.

Londonderry 18, Central 2: In Londonderry, Julia Wasserman scored six goals and teammates Alexa Bedell, Gabbi Morris and Molly Koon each scored twice for 11-5 LHS.

Nashua North 15, Memorial 11: In Nashua, Jexi Williams scored seven goals to pace the Titans to a win over the Crusaders in Div. I action on Tuesday. Kara Upton had two goals and two assists for the winners.

Pinkerton 15, Exeter 10: In Exeter, Kennedy Daziel and Erin Coutts scored four goals apiece as the Astros downed the Blue Hawks in Div. I action on Tuesday. Sierra Sanchez scored three goals for Pinkerton.

Derryfield 16, John Stark 11: In Manchester, Brynn Polgrean scored six goals for the Cougars (10-2). John Stark falls to 6-6.
