Chester man pleads guilty to child porn case one week after conviction for sexual assault

Gary Britton, 60, of Chester appeared Tuesday in Rockingham County Superior Court, where he pleaded guilty to 10 counts of possession of child sexual abuse images. JAMES A. KIMBLE/UNION LEADER CORRESPONDENT

BRENTWOOD – A Chester man convicted by a jury last week of sexually assaulting a young girl in the 1990s pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges that he kept child pornography on a computer hard drive hidden under his bed.

Gary Britton, 60, entered his guilty plea on 10 counts of possession of child sexual abuse images as part of a plea agreement in which he will let a judge decide his ultimate sentence.

Britton’s plea comes one week after a jury convicted him of aggravated felonious sexual assault. He sexually abused a girl for four years on a regular basis starting in 1991 when she was 9 years old.

Judge N. William Delker said after last week’s verdict that he would decide on a sentence once all of Britton’s pending charges are resolved.

Chester police first arrested Britton Sept. 22, 2011, for failing to register as a sex offender, but a landslide of other charges came once they began searching his apartment.

Now that the child pornography case is decided, Britton has one case left. He is scheduled to go on trial July 29 for being a felon in possession of a weapon after police determined he had a handgun.

Britton, who was convicted of sexually assaulting a child in 1983, could draw a sentence that will put him in state prison for the rest of his life.
