The University of Connecticut baseball team has 19 Connecticut-born players on its roster, but three players from New Hampshire have played a large role in the team’s success this season.

Pitcher Carson Cross (Brentwood/Exeter High School), pitcher Dan Feehan (Nashua/Nashua South) and infielder Billy Ferriter (Nashua/Nashua South) all play for a UConn team that will open the NCAA Division I Tournament on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Virginia Tech.

Cross, a sophomore, is scheduled to start on the mound against Virginia Tech. He’s 8-4 with a 2.50 ERA in 15 appearances (all starts) this season, and was named to the All-Big East Conference Second Team.

UConn earned a spot in the 64-team field by beating Notre Dame in the Big East tournament’s championship game. Ferriter, a senior center fielder, hit .500 in the tournament and was named the tournament’s most outstanding player.

Ferriter, New Hampshire’s starting quarterback in the 2008 Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl, enters Friday night’s game third on the team with a .285 batting average. He has appeared in each of UConn’s 60 games,

Feehan, also a senior, is a right-handed relief pitcher who set the UConn record for career appearances by a pitcher earlier this season. He’s 2-4 with a 3.62 ERA in 23 appearances this season, and has appeared in 84 games during his time at UConn.

UConn earned a spot in the NCAA tournament for the third time in four years.

Clark shines for Elon

Manchester resident Dylan Clark helped Elon secure an NCAA tournament berth by winning the Southern Conference Tournament,

Clark, who played high school baseball at Trinity, pitched five scoreless innings in a 7-6 triumph over Georgia Southern that propelled Elon to the Southern Conference title game. He struck out six and walked one in the three-inning relief appearance, and is one of five Elon players who made the all-tournament team.

Elon beat The Citadel to win the conference championship and will begin the NCAA tournament with a game against UNC-Wilmington on Friday night.
