Hooksett official says no incentives from town for Bass Pro Shops

HOOKSETT - Hooksett Town Administrator Dean Shankle said that with a new Bass Pro Shop coming into town, officials from the company have said to expect that 300 new jobs will be created in the area.

He said he was unfamiliar that many towns around the country had offered financial incentives to lure Bass Pro Shops, saying that type of business arrangement would be unusual in New Hampshire.

Once the Bass Pro Shops is open this fall, Shankle said he expects Exit 10 of Interstate 93 to become a "gateway to the North Country, where people will stop for sporting goods supplies before they head up north."

Shankle said that Bass Pro has been looking at Hooksett for years, but a slow economy delayed the retail giant's decision to open a store.

"I am very happy this is happening," Shankle said. "It is a great thing. This could get the ball rolling on other things."

He added that with some land available near the future Bass Pro store, Hooksett has space for growth.

"If predictions are correct, this will bring in a lot of traffic from far away.

Right now the closest Bass Pro to here is down by (Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.)," he said. "People drive up to 70 miles to go to the store. Now for northern New England, we are going to be easier to get to, and we also have the added advantage of no sales tax - cheaper to buy a boat here than in Massachusetts."
