KEENE — The assault of an off-duty Jaffrey police officer is under investigation.
Police responded to Gilbo Avenue for a reported assault at 11:19 p.m. Monday night, Keene police Sgt. Christopher Simonds said.
Jaffrey Police Officer Joseph Golinski had been found unconscious by his friends, another off-duty Jaffrey officer and an off-duty Nashua officer, after the trio had a run-in with a group of men.
The off-duty officers were leaving an establishment in the city where they had just watched a Bruins game when they came across a group of men letting the air out of the tires of one of their vehicles. While the other officers chased the men, Golinski stayed with the vehicle.
When they returned Golinski was unconscious, having been assaulted by one of the men the off-duty officers had confronted, and was being cared for by a witness who saw part of the assault, Simonds said.
Golinski was taken to Cheshire Medical Center in Keene and later released.
Simonds said the off duty officers had no prior contact with the group of men and there is no evidence the group of men even knew the men were off-duty officers.
The assault remains under investigation.
