NH GOP chair asks Dover mayor to resign from Bloomberg group in wake of rally naming killers victims of gun violence
She says Trefethen is the only N.H. public official to hold membership in the group run by "liberal New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg" that she says has openly collaborated with President Obama's Organizing for Action in New Hampshire.
Mayor Trefethen was unmoved by Horn's appeal.
"Ms. Horn's email is full of the usual standard political attack language, which does nothing to further the discussion," he said. "If she has true outrage about an out-of-state group attacking Sen. Ayotte, then I'm sure she will also be outraged at the out-of-state group that is attacking Sen. Shaheen. When I see the standards applied equally, then I will take Ms. Horn's email seriously, but until then it will be disregarded as political rhetoric, and nothing else."
On Tuesday, Mayors Against Illegal Guns held a rally in Concord where more than 6,000 names of people killed by guns since the Sandy Hook Elementary School massacre in Newtown, Conn.
Boston marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev, who was shot dead by police, was among the names read out loud which caused a furor. MAIG later issued an apology.
Horn, in her letter to Trefethen, says others who were memorialized at the event were Christopher Dorner, a former Los Angeles police officer who went on a killing spree in February, and Kevin Bailey, who was killed by police after opening fire on officers during a traffic stop.
The National Rifle Association released a statement Friday claiming a review of the list of names read by members of Mayors Against Illegal Guns found 50 of the 617 names read were those of crime suspects killed by police or shot dead by citizens claiming a right of self-defense. The NRA said of 13 people on the list from Montana, "more than half" were either shot by police or had committed suicide.
