Report: Clippers close to acquiring Celtics' Doc Rivers

The Los Angeles Clippers are close to reaching an agreement to acquire coach Doc Rivers from the Boston Celtics, Yahoo! Sports reported Sunday.

According to the report, based on information from sources, the Clippers would send a 2015 first-round draft pick to the Celtics to obtain the rights to Rivers.

Talks involving the acquisition of Rivers seemed to be dead when discussions broke off on Friday, and there were reports that Rivers was no longer interested in becoming the Clippers coach.

However, discussion began again on Sunday when the Clippers offered a first-round pick to the Celtics, who may be in a rebuilding mode.

The Celtics apparently agreed to accept a 2015 unprotected first-round pick.

The Clippers and Rivers still have to reach an agreement on a contract for the deal to be completed.

The parties are working out the specifics of a proposed five-year, $35 million contract, according to Yahoo! Sports.

The NBA would still need to approve the deal, and commissioner David Stern has said he won’t approve any deal for Rivers that is part of a player trade. The parties are hoping he will accept deal that involves only future draft picks as compensation for the rights to Rivers.
