Goffstown police to raise funds for Special Olympics
GOFFSTOWN — If you see police knocking on businesses’ doors Wednesday don’t be alarmed — it’s all for a good cause.
Members of the Goffstown Police Department will be jogging through town collecting money on June 26 to benefit the 2013 Special Olympics.
This mini torch run takes place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning on Daniel Plummer Drive to St. Anselm Drive, then to Mast Road in Pinardville and up Main Street.
“A police cruiser will be escorting Team Uncanoonuc from business to business,” said Goffstown police Detective Jason Ouellette. “All businesses are aware we are coming and some have checks all ready for us.”
About six Team Uncanoonuc members, including some from the records department, police and dispatchers, are volunteering their time. The goal is to raise $2,000 or more. All proceeds go to the local Special Olympics team.
The department has been taking part in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for about five years, said Ouellette.
Chris Krajenka, former New Boston Police Chief, spearheaded the Goffstown Torch Run while he was serving as an officer in Goffstown, and continued the fundraiser in New Boston, said Ouellette. When Kajenka left Goffstown police, Ouellette took the helm to make sure the fundraiser continued.
“It’s just an incredible feeling to support Special Olympics,” he said.
Ouellette said businesses have come to expect the officers jogging door to door and have been supportive of the program.
But, donors don’t have to wait for officers to stop by. There are two drop-off boxes located at the Pizza Market and the Goffstown Police Department for residents and businesses wishing to donate.
Donations may also be mailed to: Team Uncanoonuc, Goffstown Police Department, 326 Mast Road, Goffstown, 03045.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run is celebrating its 29th year of raising money so athletes can compete in the program, and spreading awareness of Special Olympics throughout New Hampshire.
The official 2013 Torch Run was held May 12-31.
